The cardiologist, Pim van Lommel has been a poineer in studying near-death-experience (NDE) since the middle part of the last century. I am not going to review the main part of his discussion of NDE, since this and other altered states of consciousness seem to comprise their own specialist area of controversy, which I try to only touch on when they directly impinge on consciousness theory.
