The Challenge Confronting Science Today

In digging deeper and deeper into the world of atoms, particle physicists have surprisingly entered into the realm of the metaphysical that many acknowledge is an essential part of the cosmic picture. The challenge to formulate a model that can explain both the physical and the metaphysical in a coherent and cohesive fashion presents itself as the biggest challenge of science today.

This challenge takes several forms. I will mention only three. Albeit related to each other, each form has its peculiarities. These three forms are: (1) discovering the much elusive Theory of Everything (TOE); (2) unifying Einstein’s general relativity theory and quantum physics; (3) understanding the Big Bang singularity.

TOE, also related to the Ultimate Particle or God Particle, remains to be discovered. The Higgs boson failed and physicists relentlessly continue to crack open the mysterious world of atoms, both theoretically and empirically. What mathematicians are doing with the Ferent equation is one step towards this direction.

To this day, unifying Einstein’s general relativity theory and quantum mechanics remains to be a great hurdle. Is gravity already operating in the quantum world, just as the three other forces are? This question demands a theoretical, mathematical, and empirical response.

Finally, the question of our beginnings is still to be resolved. The most compelling evidence so far is the Big Bang singularity interpretation of Stephen Hawking.

Others are entertaining several other theories like the String theory, M theory, Multiverse theory, Parallel Universes theory, and the Many-Worlds Interpretation. But, given our technical and financial constraints, there's still no way to verify these theories. Their mathematics, however, are too elegant and exquisite to be ignored and dismissed.

We Are Like Chasing Our Shadows

The Theory of Everything remains not only elusive but also contentious. It concerns the issue of gravity, space, time, matter, energy, and even God. Meanwhile, differing views and opinions will continue. The beauty is that communication and dialogue between and among various disciplines as well as individuals are intensifying and proliferating.

The Theory of Everything

What Albert Einstein and the other founders of quantum physics are saying to us is that there is something wrong with how humanity, as a collective and an individual species, view our world today. Science has always been searching for that one short mathematical formulation, similar to the E=mc2 of Einstein, that can unite all the physical forces of Nature. They have succeeded at first to unite electricity and magnetism (electromagnetism).

Then, Einstein was able to fuse together space, time, mass, gravity, energy, and light in his theory of relativity. With the discovery, however, of the quantum world, physicists are now exploring how to unite Einstein’s theory of gravity and the three forces that govern the behavior and dynamics of the quantum world.

Everything is still ups for grabs, each one racing to be the first to receive the Nobel Laureate in Physics. In class, I discuss what physicists have done so far and this led me to some of the theories that are now regarded collectively as the closest possible candidate to pass as the “Theory of Everything."

These are: (1) the Wave-Energy behavior of quantum particles; (2) the Role of the Conscious Observer; (3) the Paradoxical Cube and the Schrodinger’s cat parable; (4) the Super-String theory (or String theory for short) and its extension, the M theory; (5) the Parallel Universes theory; (6) the Holographic Interpretation of our Cosmos; and (7) the Zero-Point Field theory.

If I am to give a bird’s-eye-view of what and where quantum physics is leading us to, it is this. In their quest for that long-sought “Theory of Everything,” they have stumbled upon a world that goes beyond our physical dimension of time, space, matter, gravity, and energy. They have entered the horizon of the metaphysical and the spiritual or the divine. To avoid any reference to God, they would say that the metaphysical world has entered into the quantum world.

They are all telling us that if we want to understand our Cosmos in its totality, we cannot not just simply ignore the metaphysical realm for it provides the archetype, the unifying model that could explain the essence, being or raison d’etre of our universe. The E in the E=mc2 of Einstein has opened a Pandora’s box that is full of Unmanifested phenomena, appearing still to us as invisible, mystical, and mysterious.

Today, physicists are continuing to explore the unknown by studying the infinite number of shattered particles left over as a result of the discovery of the Higgs boson in 2012. What they are saying lately, in fact announced publicly only two months ago, is that these remnant photons may contain what they term as “unparticle.”

The Theory of Everything Challenges Both Science and Religion

In Quantum Physics, the Theory of Everything (TOE) is conceived as a theoretical framework that could link together all the physical aspects of the universe in a coherent way.

Over the past few centuries, two theoretical frameworks for understanding the Cosmos evolved. These are the general relativity (GR) and the quantum field theories (QFT), both of which were formulated by the legendary Albert Einstein. GR focuses on gravity and its effects in large-scale structures—planets, stars, galaxies, and clusters of galaxies—while QFT concentrates on three non-gravitational forces—electromagnetic force, weak nuclear force, and strong nuclear force--that operate in the micro-scale structures, or the world of atoms and molecules. QFT successfully unified the three non-gravitational forces: weak, strong, and electromagnetic force. This has come to be known today as the Grand Unified Theory (GUT). But TOE remainns elusive.

Since then, the search for the TOE has become the Holy Grail of modern physics. Einstein and the rest of the founders of QP spent most of their time pondering how the four physical forces could be linked together as one.Their efforts were not laid in vain for they led to the development of the String theory and its extension M theory. While still under rigorous scrutiny and verification, these two recent theories are believed to be the most likely candidates that could unify all known particles and forces into one coherent theoretical framework.

In the meantime, the search for the TOE continues to this day. Another theory, the Higgs boson, touted as the God Particle or the Ultimate Theory of Everything, is still in progress. The results of the experiments conducted by empirical scientists in Switzerland’s CERN laboratory are still being investigated and interpreted.

In the meantime, the Theory of Everything remains elusive as ever.

QP is a very dynamic science. I predict that for the next 10-20 years, there will be more startling discoveries in the quantum world that could turn our view of the Cosmos and our understanding of ourselves upside down. This should shake Religion to get out of its lethargy and join Science in exploring the still unknown world out there. Unless it does this, Religion—and I am referring to those who rule their constituents by force and manipulation—would remain stagnant, dark, and dead.

Yet, I go with others in declaring that Science does not know everything in the same manner that I respect Atheists saying that Religion does not know anything at all. But both Science and Religion have to reach out to each other and join hands in discovering the Theory of Everything. We can only join Stephen Hawking’s lamentation that, had our ancient ancestors been religious enough in searching for the Theory of Everything, then, everything would have been solved and there would have been no problems of violence and corruption plaguing our society today. Then, truth would have prevailed over fanaticism.

But what has Religion got to offer?

Religion is more known in history for its wars and killings rather than peace and love. Yes, indeed, but if Religion is really true to its teachings, it has a lot to offer to humanity. It could claim that in the beginning was the Theory of Everything and the TOE was God. Its metaphysics could then be surreptitiously transported to physics. Science would have no way of disproving this because it is also too busy minding its own business, saddled as it is with a lot of unanswered questions: “What triggers the Big Bang? What Cosmic Force propelled something to manifest from out of nothing?” Yes, questions which Religion might be able to give a more meaningful answer.

THE UNIFIED FIELD THEORY OF INTELLIGENCE

ALBERT EINSTEIN WAS LOOKING FOR AN EQUATION THAT COULD EXPLAIN THE REASON OF EVERYTHING. THIS IS THE "THEORY OF EVERYTHING" or "GRAND UNIFIED THEORY." NOT FINDING IT HE TEMPORARILY TERMED IT "LOVE".

QUANTUM PHYSICIST JOHN HAGELIN EXPLAINED THAT UNDERLYING THIS MATHEMATICAL EQUATION IS A "SINGLE UNIVERSAL FIELD OF INTELLIGENCE" THAT GAVE BIRTH TO HIS "UNIFIED FIELD THEORY".

MAX PLANCK CALLED IT THE "COSMIC MIND AND INTELLIGENCE" WHO IS "THE MATRIX OF ALL MATTER".

DAVID BOHME LABELLED IT AS THE "UNMANIFEST," EQUIVALENT TO THE PRIMAL ENERGY OF EINSTEIN.

ALL THESE THEORIES IMPLY THAT WE COSMIC RESIDENTS--GALAXIES, PLANETS, PLANTS, ANIMALS, AND HUMANS--ARE ALL "UNIFIED AND ONE" SINCE WE ARE ALL MADE OF THE SAME ENERGY IN THE EQUATION E=mc2.
